story · music · places

Thank you for the double! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:56, 9 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Pictured on the same Main page: Brian's Mozart family grand tour, my story today, and Mozart related to all three items of music on my talk: our 2023 concert, an opera in a theatre where a Mozart premiere took place, and those remembered, Martti Wallén, a bass, and Liana Isakadze, a violinist from Georgia, (whose article would be better with more details about her music-making). --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:56, 9 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

My story today is - because of the anniversary of the premiere OTD in 1782 - about Die Entführung aus dem Serail, opera by Mozart, while yesterday's was - because of the TFA - about Les contes d'Hoffmann, opera by Offenbach, - so 3 times Mozart again if you click on "music" ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:44, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Glad to hear that you've been keeping busy. I'm running out of ideas for things to write...  — Chris Woodrich (talk) 13:47, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I turned (in 2019) to the list of deaths (now Deaths in 2024) and take care of the articles of those I'm interested in, + those with most sources in German, + women, - usually more than I can handle. If good enough they get to the Main page (RD) with a much easier review process than DYK, where - for some reason I don't know - they tend to attract more interest than DYK. More recently, I turned to influence the anniversaries OTD, - also rewarding. The Mozart opera, however, was brought there by others, and I had no time yet to find out who, - I just liked it. I recently saw it live, in a theatre where an earlier work by him was premiered, and our 2023 choral concert was also by Mozart, - both featured, as I said, in "music" today. Will change tomorrow. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:58, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I keep meaning to check out our local symphony orchestra. I should really give it a go... as for the writing, since trying to come back I've basically been blowing with the wind. I only did one film article, The Great Mecca Feast, and that was mostly because I realized that the film was attracting academic attention after Rukkayah reached out to me a few years back.  — Chris Woodrich (talk) 14:03, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Good idea, to listen. (I have red links of artists that impressed me in all recent years, that would be another job ...) - You could get film articles you did in the past to OTD, it's not difficult: find the premiere date, add a one-line blurb about it to the year (example 1782) and the date articles (16 July), with a reference for the premiere, and then to the selected anniversary for that date, - round anniversary preferred, but for the Mozart it was not round. I found in the meantime that PFHLai brought it there for Mozart. The current team is interested in fewer battles and desasters, so film releases would be a welcome alternative. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:12, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Theodore von Kármán

Theodore von Kármán (1881–1963) was a Hungarian-American mathematician, aerospace engineer and physicist, who worked in aeronautics and astronautics. He was responsible for crucial advances in aerodynamics characterizing supersonic airflow. The human-defined threshold of outer space is named the Kármán line in recognition of his work. This 1959 photograph shows von Kármán (left) joined by United States Air Force and NASA officials while inspecting two missile models used in the high-velocity, high-altitude wind tunnels at Arnold Air Force Base. The missiles shown are the AGARD-B and the Atlas Series-B.
