Actor names in film plot sections

[edit]

I am rolling back your edits, as you have no consensus for them. It's settled Wikipolicy that a WikiProject cannot mandate the content of the articles it claims to be in its realm of interest, and WP:FILMPLOT does exactly taht. Any mass edit such as this must have the proper consensus from the community, prefereably in an RfC advertised at WP:Centralized discussions, not from a WikProjecft discussion in a semi-private corner of the site. Beyond My Ken (talk) 00:55, 7 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

You have undone two of my edits. Please do not continue in this. Please read WP:BRD. When your Bold edit has been Reverted by another editor, the recommended next step, if you continue to think the edit is necessary, is to Discuss the dispute on the article talk page with other editors, but not to re-revert it, which is the first step to edit warring, a disruptive activity which is not allowed. Beyond My Ken (talk) 00:56, 7 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Beyond My Ken:Hiya, you have an interesting user page, very useful. There's a lot of repetition on those pages, and the format which most films use seem to be to leave the cast in their bit.Halbared (talk) 00:59, 7 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Don't "Hiya" me. Stop what you're doing ritght now, You have no consensus to make these edits, and if you continue, my net stop is to ANI to get you sanctioned for editing wihtout a consensus, which is WP:Disruptive. WP:FILMPLOT has been a problem for a long time, as the people in WikiProject film try to control "their" articles, but there was never a community consensus discussion about it, and FILMPLOT remains a guideline, and a private one only agreed to by the members of the film project. If you want to continue doing this, go to WP:Centralized discussion and star an RfC, but in the meantime you must stop. 01:05, 7 February 2021 (UTC)
@Beyond My Ken:No need to get excited, I am trying to tidy up the articles, you could start a rfc for that maybe? Instead of following me and threatening me, if you have a problem with filmplot?Halbared (talk) 01:09, 7 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Beyond My Ken:I'd be more than willing to work with you, than having you stalk me forever. :)Halbared (talk) 01:17, 7 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Beyond My Ken: Wikipedia:Centralized discussion is a good idea, have you an idea on how to best phrase it?Halbared (talk) 01:20, 7 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
First, revert all the changes you've made, then we can talk. I'd be happy to work with you on the phrasing of an RfC, but only after all the articles have been restored to their status quo ante.Beyond My Ken (talk) 01:22, 7 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Beyond My Ken:I've looked at WP:plot and it says not to include the cast. So, I'm confused.Halbared (talk) 01:29, 7 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
That is precisely what I'm talk about. It's not a community-consensus guidline, it was promulgated by WikProject Film without the approval of the community. Any' find of mass change such as you were making requires a specific community consensus, which you do not have. Beyond My Ken (talk) 02:06, 7 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Hello, I'm Walter Görlitz. I noticed that you added or changed content in an article, Christmas, but you didn't provide a reliable source. It's been removed and archived in the page history for now, but if you'd like to include a citation and re-add it, please do so. You can have a look at referencing for beginners. If you think I made a mistake, you can leave me a message on my talk page. The infobox is to be a summary of content in the article, not a place to introduce novel material. If you want to add a sentence or paragraph about this rarely used term in the prose, feel free to, but the infobox is not the correct place for it. Walter Görlitz (talk) 17:32, 13 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hiya @Walter Görlitz:, thank you for taking the time to explain. Can you advise on a reliable source?Halbared (talk) 09:37, 14 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The source itself is fine, but the place you keep adding is not. If you plan to include it in the Christmas article, the 20th century sub-section of the history section would be a good place, but Christmas and holiday season would be even better as it is more about the secular celebrations rather than the religious nature of the day. Walter Görlitz (talk) 18:14, 14 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Walter Görlitz: OK thanks, you are incorrect about it being a 'rarely used' term, it's common in the UK, and the infobox does state 'nicknames', but I'll add it in the areas you advise.Halbared (talk) 18:19, 14 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I am not unfamiliar with its use in the UK, which is why I say rarely, but let's test our assumptions: https://books.google.com/ngrams/graph?content=Christmas%2CNo%C3%ABl%2C+Nativity%2CXmas%2CChrimbo&year_start=1800&year_end=2019&corpus=26&smoothing=3&direct_url=t1%3B%2CChristmas%3B%2Cc0%3B.t1%3B%2CNo%C3%ABl%3B%2Cc0%3B.t1%3B%2CNativity%3B%2Cc0%3B.t1%3B%2CXmas%3B%2Cc0%3B.t1%3B%2CChrimbo%3B%2Cc0 and without "Christmas" https://books.google.com/ngrams/graph?content=No%C3%ABl%2CNativity%2CXmas%2CChrimbo&year_start=1800&year_end=2019&corpus=26&smoothing=3&direct_url=t1%3B%2CNo%C3%ABl%3B%2Cc0%3B.t1%3B%2CNativity%3B%2Cc0%3B.t1%3B%2CXmas%3B%2Cc0%3B.t1%3B%2CChrimbo%3B%2Cc0#t1%3B%2CNo%C3%ABl%3B%2Cc0%3B.t1%3B%2CNativity%3B%2Cc0%3B.t1%3B%2CXmas%3B%2Cc0%3B.t1%3B%2CChrimbo%3B%2Cc0 it barely registers. In searching, the Christmas article does have an "other names" sub-section. It may be appropriate there, but again, it is rarely used. 18:26, 14 January 2022 (UTC)
It's not assumptions, it's hearing it regularly. Google is a poor source for UK slang, chrimbo is in common usage and can be heard across Christmas and as normal only the UK slang that Americans pick up gets a handle on google or other US weighted services. It's why UK ad homs can be used across YouTube and elsewhere. It may be not be common outside the UK which is understandable as it's UK slang, but it's common within the UK.Halbared (talk) 18:40, 14 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Roald Dahl

[edit]

I saw you thanked me for my edit on Roald Dahl. Another editor sent me a warning about edit wars. He once again changed the article on Dahl from "a British writer" (and he is a well-known British writer) to "a Welsh-born Norwegian writer". I think I might be dealing with some Scandinavian NATIONALIST. Can you help me on this isssue? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Destrothemachine (talkcontribs) 06:54, 3 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Destrothemachine: At this point, you are doing a good job of putting yourself on a path towards sanctions against you. Calling me a ″Scandinavian nationalist″ is a borderline personal attack on a board where assuming good faith is standard, I've even edited the article to I think better reflect the situation but I am not sure if you have seen that. I posted an edit warring notice on your page because, uh, you were edit warring. In other words repeatedly reverting to your preffered version, you were well on your way to breaking the three revert rule, the fact you you just remove the notice and don't realize your misconduct speaks volumes. I don't want problems here but keep on acting like this and there will be. Trying to recruit others to do your bidding after you know yourself you were edit warring is also pretty low. --TylerBurden (talk) 07:01, 3 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@TylerBurden: I made a mistake and I apologise. You have changed the Roald Dahl article to mutual satisfaction. Thank you for that and I wish you the best. Once again, I'm honestly sorry about all of thisDestrothemachine (talk) 07:14, 3 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion discussion about Gardening (disambiguation)

[edit]

Hello Halbared, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia.

While your contributions are appreciated, I wanted to let you know that I've started a discussion about whether an article that you created, Gardening (disambiguation), should be deleted, as I am not sure that it is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia in its current form. Your comments are welcome at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Gardening (disambiguation).

Deletion discussions usually run for seven days and are not votes. Our guide about effectively contributing to such discussions is worth a read. The most common issue in these discussions is notability, but it's not the only aspect that may be discussed; read the nomination and any other comments carefully before you contribute to the discussion. Last but not least, you are highly encouraged to continue improving the article; just be sure not to remove the tag about the deletion nomination from the top.

If you have any questions, please leave a comment here and prepend it with {{Re|Cremastra}}. And don't forget to sign your reply with ~~~~ . Thanks!

Introduction to contentious topics

[edit]

You have recently edited a page related to Yasuke, a topic designated as contentious. This is a brief introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.

A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have an expanded level of powers and discretion in order to reduce disruption to the project.

Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:

Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures, you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic here. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{Ctopics/aware}} template.

Your recent, 15:40, 23 February 2025, edit to It (character) has reintroduced two template errors, and their corresponding error messages, "{{cite web}}: |last= has generic name (help)". Neither source identifies an author, nor do they use the term "BBC Editors". AfD for Sexuality in The Lord of the Rings

[edit]

Hi Halbared, following our discussion at Talk:Themes of The Lord of the Rings#Sexuality, etc., we seem to align on the need for the AfD. As an IP editor, I’m unable to create Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Sexuality in The Lord of the Rings. Would you be willing to create the page? I’ve revised my draft nomination below to strengthen the case, but feel free to adapt it or create your own version. Alternatively, if you just create a blank page, I should be able to post the nomination myself. Thank you! 87.116.181.138 (talk) 12:28, 21 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I've checked with an admin to see if this is OK and it seems it is. Halbared (talk) 09:35, 23 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The page is created. When I enter into chats over deletes/moves/merges/rfcs and the like, I like to see what other parties say and come to a conclusion, I rarely enter a chat with a preconceived idea of how I will lean, as I like to be open to discussions and chats on what is best for the page. Halbared (talk) 12:01, 23 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, Halbared, for creating the blank page and consulting an admin. I wouldn't have proposed this if I believed it would cause issues. I appreciate your collaborative approach and will proceed with the nomination text and notifications. Please feel free to fully participate in the AfD comments. I look forward to community input. 87.116.181.138 (talk) 12:13, 23 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The article Sexuality in The Lord of the Rings does not meet Wikipedia’s notability guidelines (WP:NOTE) for a standalone page and violates WP:COATRACK, WP:DUE, and WP:FRINGE. It aggregates loosely related interpretations—feminist analyses (e.g., Shelob as vagina dentata), queer readings of Frodo/Sam, and non-sexual themes like friendship or heroic bonds—under a broad “sexuality” framework, creating a misleading synthesis that overemphasizes speculative perspectives not central to Tolkien’s work. Many cited sources (e.g., Partridge, Jaques) are niche within Tolkien scholarship, and reliance on primary texts (e.g., Tolkien’s letters) risks WP:NOR by inferring sexual themes not explicitly supported. Other content, particularly on gender dynamics, overlaps with Women in The Lord of the Rings.

While the article holds Good Article status (GA review, Sept. 2021), this reflects one reviewer’s assessment and does not override community consensus on notability or due weight. Sexuality is not a primary or widely recognized theme in The Lord of the Rings, unlike themes like heroism or good vs. evil, and the article’s 39k-byte scope gives WP:UNDUE weight to minority views, potentially inflating their prominence (WP:LIPSTICK).

I propose merging notable content to existing articles: vagina dentata symbolism to a “Symbolism” section in Shelob, and queer perspectives to a “Debated themes” subsection in Themes of The Lord of the Rings, following precedents like Themes in A Song of Ice and Fire. Since Women in The Lord of the Rings already covers related gender themes, these merges would place content in more relevant contexts, eliminating the need for a standalone article. If merging is not viable, deletion is warranted per Wikipedia’s content policies.

Mysterious Cities of Gold

[edit]

Hi, I'm contacting you about reverting my edit. Which details from the old version would you like me to keep? I'd like to make things right. I just cannot stand the old format haha, it is not organized at all, and as I already mentioned, there were some mistakes in there (e.g. calling the Solaris a flying ship). I recognize that it may have been difficult (because of the way Wikipedia set it up) for you to see what I changed and what information I kept, if you didn't read both versions entirely. If you like, I can show you a side-by-side comparison, paragraph by paragraph. Cathy Vanilla 999 (talk) 08:58, 26 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hiya, yes that would be helpful. I did endeavour to read them side by side, but as you say, it can get confusing. I liked your changes about Estaban at the start, it seems more accurate, not the stuff about the Olmecs, I feel 'alien' could have many interpretations. It's why I found an appropriate link for how they looked. The Solaris was the golden ship, it is not accurate? @Cathy Coatlicue. Halbared (talk) 09:05, 26 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Cathy Vanilla 999 (talk) 19:27, 26 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Wow... The reply is totally blank. Lemme try that again Cathy Vanilla 999 (talk) 19:27, 26 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your quick response! Sorry for the delay on my side, I needed to sleep. The Solaris had a gold figurehead and command bridge, but the rest was white and silver, and it was a boat. You can find more info on the MCOG wiki fandom. Here is the comparison between revisions. I've labeled all my parts “Cathy”, all the previous “Prev”, and there were some parts that I moved from one section to another (that's the organization I keep going on about), which I've labeled “Prev (rearr)”. If you find my edits acceptable, you can revert the page back to it, and I'll make the further minor adjustments you suggested.
Cathy: In 1532, a Spanish orphan named Esteban wishes to find his father. He agrees to join a navigator, Mendoza - who rescued the baby Esteban from a sinking ship - on his voyage to find one of the Seven Cities of Gold in the New World. Esteban's mysterious power to command the sun is welcomed by the crew of the galleon Esperanza.
Prev: In 1532, a Spanish orphan named Esteban joins Mendoza, a navigator…in their search for one of the Seven Cities of Gold in the New World, hoping to find his father.
Prev (rearr): Esteban seeks his long-lost father and he is also tied to Mendoza, who rescued him from a sinking ship when he was a baby. Esteban seems to have a magical ability to make the sun appear, which proves to be an invaluable asset throughout the series.
Cathy: They are accompanied by Zia, an Inca girl who was kidnapped at the age of seven and brought back to Spain by Pizarro. She is now recaptured by Gomez, Perez, and Mendoza, with the purpose of making her read a golden quipu, said to contain a hint about the Cities of Gold. Zia also wants to find her father, and she and Esteban discover that they wear identical golden medallions.
Prev (rearr): They are joined on their quest by Zia, an Incan girl (who was kidnapped by Gomez, Gaspard, Perez and Mendoza)....Zia also seeks her father, from whom she was taken and was brought to Spain as a gift for the princess Margarita when she was seven years old. She has a medallion just like the one which Esteban carries.…Reminiscences of this ancient story are present in Inca legends written on golden quipu, which only Zia can read. This triggers an obsessive quest for the Cities of Gold on the part of the Spaniards Mendoza, Gomez, Gaspard and Francisco Pizarro.
Cathy: After passing through the Straits of Magellan, the Esperanza splinters, and the antagonists - Gomez, Gaspard, and Perez - escape the wreck on a lifeboat. The two children, Mendoza, and his two greedy associates, Sancho and Pedro, are shipwrecked on the Galapagos islands. There, they meet Tao, the sole descendant of the Empire of Hiva (“Mu” in French and Japanese). He joins them on their quest in hopes of protecting the Cities of Gold from their prophesied destruction at the hands of Europeans, and to seek remnants of his ancestors’ work. He brings a golden jar and his parakeet, Kokapetl.
Prev (rearr): They are constantly pursued by antagonists Gomez and Gaspard, who are also in search of the Cities of Gold. …and (joined by) his associates Sancho and Pedro, and Tao, the last descendant of the sunken empire of Mu (Hiva in the English version)....Tao seeks signs of his ancestors.
Cathy: The series combines South American history and mythology, archaeology, and science fiction. The travelers encounter the Incas, the Olmecs, the Mayas, as well as the Urus, the Amazons, and even Francisco Pizarro and Malinche. They discover many lost technological wonders of the Hiva Empire, including the Solaris, a huge solar-powered sailing ship and The Golden Condor, a flying vessel in the shape of a giant bird, the power of which is inexhaustible so long as the sun is out, and a barometer. Tao’s Hiva encyclopedia helps them make sense of the technology, and later, it is revealed that the Seven Cities of Gold were built many millennia ago by the Emperor of Hiva so that his valuable technology could be passed down to later generations. Esteban and Zia’s medallions were manufactured as keys to ensure the power would not fall into the wrong hands. Just after the creation of the cities, a terrible war broke out, destroying the technologically advanced Empires of Hiva and Atlantis when they used the "Weapons of the Sun".[1]
Prev: The series is a mix of ancient South American history, archaeology, and science fiction. During their journey, the travelers encounter the Mayas, Incas, and Olmecs. They discover many lost technological wonders of the Mu Empire, including the Solaris, a huge solar-powered all-metal ship and The Golden Condor, a flying vessel in the shape of a giant bird, capable of travelling considerable distances under the sun's power alone. The Seven Cities of Gold were built by the Emperor of Hiva out of fear that a global war would destroy all civilizations. Such a war actually broke out, destroying the Empires of Mu and Atlantis when they used the "Weapons of the Sun".[4] The Seven Cities of Gold hold copies of books in their "Universal Libraries"....Other elements of this technology turn up in unexpected places, like the Solaris on Tao's home island, Esteban's and Zia's medallions as keys to the Cities.
Prev (rearr): He possesses an encyclopedia which contains information about their lost technology as well as a mysterious jar…
Cathy: The other survivors of the war, the Atlanteans, hid away under the Mountain of the Burning Shield. Over the centuries, they evolved into the alien-like Olmecs, with bald heads and pointed ears, their bodies now thin and short. Some of their people - the “chosen ones” - have been placed into cryogenic sleep, to be awoken in the future and injected with the fresh, young cells of children, as they had lost the ability to reproduce. Led by their king, Menator, the Olmecs seek an artifact known as “The Great Legacy”, said to be hidden away in a city of gold, which they believe they can use to preserve their species and wipe out all others. The Olmecs primarily use spears and swords, save for their flying machine, which utilizes a powerful particle beam.
Prev: The Olmecs are the descendants of survivors of the global war who hid under their mountain. Only their elite were able to survive, suspended in cryogenic hibernation. The Olmecs have evolved from centuries living an underground existence; they are short and thin, with pointed ears and enlarged skulls. They are highly intelligent but insular and distrustful of all others. Led by their king, Menator, the Olmecs seek an artefact called the "Great Legacy" in order to power their cryogenic systems, as well as samples of healthy cells from the children in order to combat their mutations and their sterility. The Olmecs make use of contemporary devices such as spears and swords alongside elements of their advanced technological heritage, such as stasis and medical technology which allows the elite of the Olmecs to remain in suspended animation, awaiting an opportunity to revive them. This power system maintaining the Olmecs cryogenic systems is destroyed during an escape by the children and Mendoza, causing the Olmecs to conduct a frantic search for the fusion reactor core (the Great Treasure) which is hidden inside the City of Gold. They also possess a flying machine which appears to have been constructed with the same type of advanced technology which the Golden Condor was constructed with. It is armed with a particle beam or a focused heat weapon which is very powerful.
Cathy: When Zia tearfully reunites with her father in a Mayan village, he reveals the location of a City of Gold. A war breaks out between the Mayas and the Olmecs. The children insist on helping their newfound friends and, to the confusion of Sancho and Pedro, Mendoza says that he will help too, having grown fond of the three children. In their flying machines, the protagonists and the Olmecs - with Gomez and Gaspard following on foot - race to the City of Gold, where the Olmecs force Esteban and Zia to open the doors. The City of Gold defends itself against the Olmec machine, but ultimately, Menator succeeds in obtaining The Great Legacy and brings it back to the mountain of the burning shield. The Great Legacy is revealed to be a fusion reactor and, once activated, begins to melt down, destroying the city of gold.
Prev: Eventually, the Olmecs succeed, at great cost, in taking control of the Great Legacy. It begins to melt down without the moderation which is supposed to be provided by Tao's jar.
Prev (rearr): Mendoza, Sancho and Pedro are motivated by their search for gold, but Mendoza genuinely appears to be fond of the three children.
Cathy: Earthquakes and volcanic activity ensue, threatening to destroy the entire world, and Tao presents his golden jar to the high priest of the city of gold, who will be able to open it according to legend. The priest recognizes the jar as The Great Legacy's cooling rod. As the priest sacrifices his life to stop the meltdown, he is revealed to be Esteban's father.
Prev (rearr): The resulting earthquakes and volcanism destroy the City of Gold. ...as well as powerful artefacts, including the "Great Legacy", a portable fusion reactor…and Tao's jar as an important piece of the Great Legacy…which according to the legend, only the High Priest of the City of Gold can open, and it proves to be the Great Legacy's cooling or control rod system. A world-threatening meltdown is avoided by the personal sacrifice of Esteban's father who, acting as the High Priest of the Cities, is presumed to be dead after he replaces the jar.
