2015 Wikimedia photo competition[edit]

Probably too late for 2015, but has any thought been put into asking for interior pictures of listed (or other) buildings? Supermarket displays are quite ephemeral and worth recording. Modern kit makes this much more realistic to achieve than before, even without using flash. Most people take the external pic.SovalValtos (talk) 14:13, 19 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. Thank you for creating Grade I listed buildings in Kensington and Chelsea and Grade II* listed buildings in Kensington and Chelsea. Would you be able to create Grade II listed buildings in Kensington and Chelsea please?Zigzig20s (talk) 10:03, 1 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

There's only 1,209 of them! Good luck! --Peter I. Vardy (talk) 11:09, 1 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
You could break them up into several alphabetical lists, as was done for Brighton. I do think it is important to have the list.Zigzig20s (talk) 11:24, 1 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps User:Hassocks5489 will want to help us?Zigzig20s (talk) 11:25, 1 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The tables were based on a database. I don't have a copy of it myself, but User:KTC might be able to help with producing lists. Nev1 (talk) 17:10, 3 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
User:KTC: Would you like to help us with this please?Zigzig20s (talk) 07:46, 13 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Zigzig20s: It would be easier if I hadn't only done it once or twice a year and half ago and has since completely forgotten how to generate the data, but here you go. -- KTC (talk) 15:43, 14 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
User:KTC: This document is looking weird. Are you able to create the article please?Zigzig20s (talk) 16:01, 14 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Zigzig20s: It's a comma-separated values file. Open it in any spreadsheet program to see it in tabular form with one listed building per row. I'm afraid not at the moment. Maybe at some indeterminate future I would find some time to do it, but not anytime soon. -- KTC (talk) 21:15, 14 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I would be very grateful if you could unprotect this article. It has been semi - protected for four years. 156.61.250.250 (talk) 16:47, 10 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, I've gone ahead and unprotected it though may reinstate protection if vandalism returns at a disruptive level. Nev1 (talk) 17:45, 10 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. 156.61.250.250 (talk) 09:14, 11 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Any thoughts?[edit]

Slack Roman fort or Slack Roman Fort? I used the first, I copied Castleshaw but I've found Bewcastle Roman Fort, Hardknott Roman Fort, Lunt Roman Fort, Ilkley Roman Fort and Strutt's Park Roman fort. As the Romans called it something else I thought it should be named like railway stations (Piccadilly railway station). Just wanted a second opinion. I suppose they ought to be named consistently. Forgot to say Hi, hope you are well. :) J3Mrs (talk) 09:42, 20 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Ho J3Mrs, I'm keeping well - and keeping busy! Hope you're well too. My inclination with Roman forts would be much like yours: Leave fort lower case. It does end up looking a bit peculiar. I'm not sure if there's really a convention on it. Nev1 (talk) 20:30, 21 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Ok my thoughts too. Somebody changed it but that's Wikipedia for you. I only asked as I know you're interested in castles. I have no idea where to look. Thanks anyway. J3Mrs (talk) 22:26, 21 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Doug, I'll happily take a look. Nev1 (talk) 21:28, 25 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Doug Coldwell: I think that section is very clear. The potential for things to get complicated is the second of those paragraphs, but I think it was handled well. It might be worth explaining in brackets what the Latin terms mean (or perhaps just swapping dominium for 'control'). Nev1 (talk) 22:15, 25 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

List of scheduled monuments in Mendip[edit]

Hi, Your edit to List of scheduled monuments in Mendip removed a picture and references from Tithe Barn Pilton for no reason I could work out so I have reverted. Your edit summary said "(Semi-automated addition of image(s) and/or commonscat link(s) to monument list)" so I wondered if there was a problem with the gadget?— Rod talk 07:43, 4 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I'm the creator of the tool Nev1 used to make the edit and can confirm that this is a bug with it. I will work on a fix and hopefully have it out soon. Sorry for the error.--Dudemanfellabra (talk) 09:41, 4 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The fix was easier than I thought. This looks good to me. If you see anything else like this, let me know. Sorry again for the error!--Dudemanfellabra (talk) 10:02, 4 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the fix.— Rod talk 16:38, 4 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hi both, thanks for fixing the tool and sorry for not picking up on that mistake in the first place. Nev1 (talk) 19:41, 9 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
We've had a few more discussions about "bugs"/issues with using the tool on the Mendip list and List of scheduled monuments in West Somerset at User talk:Dudemanfellabra#Commons linker on List of scheduled monuments in West Somerset.— Rod talk 20:00, 9 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

A summary of a Featured Article you nominated at WP:FAC will appear on the Main Page soon. I had to squeeze the summary down to around 1200 characters; was there anything I left out you'd like to see put back in? Could you check the article one more time before its day on the Main Page? - Dank (push to talk) 03:57, 26 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Dank, I'll take a look and get back to you. Nev1 (talk) 18:08, 26 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Dank, the summary looks good to me, I don't think there's a desperate need to include more. Nev1 (talk) 16:23, 2 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, great. Will I be seeing more of your castles soon? - Dank (push to talk) 18:36, 2 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
As you might have gathered from how long it's taken me to reply(!) I'm a bit short of time at the moment. I can potter about a bit on castle articles here and there, but sadly the extra time needed for FAC quality may be a bit out of reach for the foreseeable future. That's the consequence of me being foolhardy and thinking I can juggle part-time post-graduate research with full-time work. But never say never, all it takes is the right castle. Nev1 (talk) 18:08, 10 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds like fun. Carry on. - Dank (push to talk) 18:34, 10 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Distorted map?[edit]

For this affectation map, we had removed it from Ming dynasty article, there are several other en.wiki articles still use it. Should we remove all? 98.112.79.59 (talk) 21:16, 4 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello from the team at Featured article review![edit]

We are preparing to take a closer look at Featured articles promoted in 2004–2010 that may need a review. We started with a script-compiled list of older FAs that have not had a recent formal review. The next step is to prune the list by removing articles that are still actively maintained, up-to-date, and believed to meet current standards. We know that many of you personally maintain articles that you nominated, so we'd appreciate your help in winnowing the list where appropriate.

Please take a look at the sandbox list, check over the FAs listed by your name, and indicate on the sandbox talk page your assessment of their current status. Likewise, if you have taken on the maintenance of any listed FAs that were originally nominated by a departed editor, please indicate their status. BLPs should be given especially careful consideration.

Thanks for your help! Maralia (talk) 03:22, 30 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Cadbury Castle, Somerset and missing page numbers[edit]

Hi, I've just started doing some expansion on Cadbury Castle, Somerset and noticed quite a few of the book sources are lacking page numbers. Do you have any of:

  • Alcock, Leslie (1972). "By South Cadbury is that Camelot...": Excavations at Cadbury Castle 1966-70. London: Thames and Hudson. ISBN 0-8128-1505-X.
  • Alcock, Leslie (1973). Arthur's Britain. Harmondsworth: Pelican. ISBN 978-0140213966.
  • Alcock, Leslie (1995). Cadbury Castle, Somerset: The Early Medieval Archaeology. University of Wales Press. ISBN 978-0708312759.
  • Tabor, Richard (2008). Cadbury Castle: The hillfort and landscapes. Stroud: The History Press. ISBN 978-0-7524-4715-5.

If so could you look up the relevant page numbers? Obviously any other ideas or edits for improvement would be great as I'd like to take this one to GAN sometime.— Rod talk 15:58, 4 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on File:MacLellan's Castle 20080422 - entrance.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F2 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an image page for a missing or corrupt image or an empty image description page for a Commons-hosted image.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Your recent edit on Mustafizur Rahman[edit]

I undone your last edit on Mustafizur Rahman. A part of your copyediting enhanced an error. What I am more concerned about is what made you remove some words. Feel free to neglect my comments. Ikhtiar H (talk) 12:44, 27 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ikhtiar H. Good work on getting Mustafizur's article to GA status. It's good to see an important player getting some attention. I removed some text because I thought the tone didn't quite fit with an encyclopedic writing style. So in the bit which reads "He was embraced heavily in his outset" it's unclear what embraced heavily means. Does it mean he's a fan favourite or that he is well regarded by his team mates? Nev1 (talk) 12:51, 27 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Nev1: It implies both cases but he mostly dominated the native media. Can you please raise the importance scale on both Bangladesh and cricket wikiprojects? Ikhtiar H (talk) 12:55, 27 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I'm happy changing the importance for the cricket project (and have done so), but am not familiar with WikiProject Bangladeh's importance scale so won't change that. Nev1 (talk) 12:59, 27 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Newcastle Emlyn Castle[edit]

On 18 April 2016, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Newcastle Emlyn Castle, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that sixty oxen were used to haul the siege engine that helped force Newcastle Emlyn Castle (pictured) to surrender in 1287? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Newcastle Emlyn Castle. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Newcastle Emlyn Castle), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Chepstow photos[edit]

Thanks for uploading recent photos in and around Chepstow. I've removed the one of the Wye bridge, simply because - although more recent - it was taken on a disappointingly grey day and - more importantly - shows the temporary scaffolding that was on the bridge for a few months in 2015/16 for repairs and repainting, but which was removed some time ago. It's not far from me, so I could take a new even more up-to-date photo, on a bright day, and put it up before the bicentenary celebrations later this month. Ghmyrtle (talk) 16:23, 6 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Fair enough, might be nice for something in Tim for the anniversary. Nev1 (talk) 17:28, 6 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

FAC voluntary mentoring scheme[edit]

During a recent lengthy discussion on the WP:FAC talkpage, several ideas were put forward as to how this procedure could be improved, particularly in making it more user-friendly towards first-time nominees. The promotion rate for first-timers at FAC is depressingly low – around 16 percent – which is a cause for concern. To help remedy this, Mike Christie and I, with the co-operation of the FAC coordinators, have devised a voluntary mentoring scheme, in which newcomers will guided by more experienced editors through the stages of preparation and submission of their articles. The general format of the scheme is explained in more detail on Wikipedia: Mentoring for FAC, which also includes a list of editors who have indicated that they are prepared to act as mentors.

Would you be prepared to take on this role occasionally? If so, please add your name to the list. By doing so you incur no obligation; it will be entirely for you to decide how often and on which articles you want to act in this capacity. We anticipate that the scheme will have a trial run for a few months before we appraise its effectiveness. Your participation will be most welcome. Brianboulton (talk) 21:35, 29 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Many thanks for signing up. The response from would-be mentors has been most encouraging. Schemes like this are often slow to take off, and it may be a while before we know if it's working. But with this level of support, including that of many of our most experienced FA editors, I think it has every chance. Brianboulton (talk) 16:51, 30 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
It's a good idea and I hope the mentoring goes well. I think the number of people signing up is important as it shows people want to help. Thanks for the invite, I probably wouldn't have put my name forward otherwise since I was unsure how much time I'll have to mentor. Nev1 (talk) 18:18, 30 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Deva Victrix[edit]

Hey I wanted to talk to you about putting Deva Victrix up for FAC, as you were a main contributor, I mistakenly made the FAC without consulting anyone, I was directed towards you for advice and mentoring, as this is my first FAC. Iazyges Consermonor Opus meum 02:27, 21 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Iazyges, no worries. It's strange to think that went to FAC 8 years ago. It would be great to see it go through FAC. I'll take part in the peer review and we'll work out what needs to be done. Nev1 (talk) 09:45, 21 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, on a semi related note do you have any idea how to fix it when your notifications say "Failed to fetch notifications?" Iazyges Consermonor Opus meum 11:55, 21 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
That's a new one to me! Perhaps go to Special:Notifications and see if things appear there. Nev1 (talk) 15:20, 21 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
By the way Iazyges, do you have access to a library which might have sources about Deva, or perhaps some access through the Wikipedia Library? Nev1 (talk) 16:31, 22 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Nev1: I have access to adam matthews, ill check if they have anything on britain. Iazyges Consermonor Opus meum 20:46, 22 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Nev1: Do you feel Deva victrix is ready? Iazyges Consermonor Opus meum 19:12, 10 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Extended confirmed protection[edit]

Hello, Nev1. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.
This message was sent to the administrators' mass message list. To opt-out of future messages, please remove yourself from the list. 17:48, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

Thanks. It does indeed look astonishing. Despite living in Monmouthshire for years, I never went. This must be rectified. Best regards, KJP1 (talk) 11:09, 9 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

You still around?[edit]

Could do with your sensible opinion over at Liverpool regarding the lede. Koncorde (talk) 14:38, 2 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Koncorde: More or less, at least when I can. I'll see if I've got time on Saturday to take a look if it's still a like issues. Nev1 (talk) 19:27, 16 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I tried to engage, but was effectively accused of "political" bias. Much of it is fine, but it's poorly phrased in current format and any suggestion I make is rejected as some kind of anti-Liverpool bias. Between you and RichardGUK I could always get a sensible opinion. Koncorde (talk) 22:56, 16 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins[edit]

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers[edit]

Hi Nev1.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:47, 15 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open![edit]

Hello, Nev1. Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2016 election, please review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 22:08, 21 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Articles on living people[edit]

Hi there. I came across two articles you created on living people (Nazma Akter and Sminu Jindal) and added Category:Living people. Brougham Castle scheduled for TFA[edit]

This is to let you know that the Brougham Castle article has been scheduled as today's featured article for February 19, 2017. Please check the article needs no amendments. If you're interested in editing the main page text, you're welcome to do so at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/February 19, 2017, but note that a coordinator will trim the lead to around 1100 characters anyway, so you aren't obliged to do so. Thanks! Jimfbleak - talk to me? 10:23, 3 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Jimfbleak: Thanks for letting me know! Nev1 (talk) 11:49, 4 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Several user rights changes you made[edit]

Hello Nev1, Last year you overrode extended confirmed autopromote requirements for this batch of editors. Is this still required or can they be reset to normal? — xaosflux Talk 15:32, 3 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Xaosflux, I gave the right to students so they could publish articles using the Content Translation Tool. They're studying MSc translation studies, so no fear of the text not being up to standard! The module resumes this month so I'd like the rights to be left in place a bit longer. Nev1 (talk) 11:45, 4 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, they probably won't know to avoid arbcom restricted topic pages - but if they are focusing on course related items unlikely to wander in to them. — xaosflux Talk 15:53, 4 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

March Madness 2017[edit]

G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:

  • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
  • updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
  • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. More information can be found here for those that are interested, and members can sign up as participants at that page also.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 March and runs until 23:59 UTC on 31 March 2017, so please sign up now.

For the Milhist co-ordinators. Regards, AustralianRupert (talk) & MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 07:24, 26 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Monnow Bridge - a favour[edit]

Dear Nev1, I pushed the above to Peer review, as I'd really like some feedback prior to FAC. However, it's languishing just at the moment. If you've got time, and the subject's of interest, I'd really appreciate any comments/suggestions you may have. Best regards. KJP1 (talk) 06:28, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi KJP1, the article looks in good nick. I'll see what I can do. Nev1 (talk) 11:12, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks - and much appreciated. KJP1 (talk) 13:23, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Very grateful. A thorough review and excellent suggestions. I shall follow up asap and they'll much improve the article. Tied up at the present with a GAR I've picked up but it won't be long. Then, I think I'll push on to FAC. And delighted you enjoyed it! If I can ever return the favour, just ping. All the best. KJP1 (talk) 18:49, 22 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Nev1, now at FAC, where it is generating some, very helpful, interest. I'm ploughing through the comments. If you had time to re-visit, it would again be greatly appreciated. All best wishes. KJP1 (talk) 13:27, 17 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Many thanks indeed for the support - and for taking it through Peer Review. I think we're nearly there and, if we are, it'll be a nice little Monmouthshire FA. Best regards. KJP1 (talk) 15:38, 1 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It looks like it's getting close, and the FAC process has helped push the quality further. Fingers crossed it passes, the subject certainly deserves a good article. Nev1 (talk) 15:46, 1 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Castle has been scheduled for the above date as today's featured article. I'd appreciate it if you could check the article one more time to make sure it's up-to-date. You're welcome but not obligated to edit the main page text; I'll be trimming it to around 1100 characters. Thanks! - Dank (push to talk) 00:27, 13 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Rescheduled for the 19th. - Dank (push to talk) 01:23, 14 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Dank: Thanks for letting me know, I'll give the text a once over before 19 July. Nev1 (talk) 15:23, 15 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
