Noble title categorisation[edit]

I noticed you've been removing noble title categories from some redirects where the main article is already under the category. The issue had previously occurred to me, and my thinking was that as the scope of the categories are the people holding those noble ranks, readers would be better served if the category allowed them to browse all the relevant noble titles. Having both an article and redirects to it in the same category isn't prohibited; see Wikipedia:Categorizing redirects#Article categories for details. For example, both Louisa May Alcott and its redirect A. M. Barnard are included in Category:Pseudonymous women writers, as the reader browsing the category might be interested in only one of them without knowing that the latter is the former's pen name. I think the same could apply to Thai noble titles. A reader interested in looking through nobles of the rank Luang might see the name Luang Praditmanutham and be interested in finding out who this person is that the road running along Chalong Rat Expressway is named after, without knowing that it is Pridi Banomyong. Removing the entry from the category robs the reader of this opportunity. If duplication is a concern, I'd argue that it would be better to keep the categories on the noble-title redirects and remove them from the articles, though I don't think that's necessary. --Paul_012 (talk) 19:14, 12 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you! It's better to keep them that way.--Polyesterchips (talk) 00:53, 13 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure which is the way you're referring to, but I'll go ahead and re-add the categories to the redirects. If you think they should be removed them from the main articles, go ahead and I won't oppose. --Paul_012 (talk) 08:20, 14 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not oppose to re-add. Thank.--Polyesterchips (talk) 14:24, 14 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguation pages[edit]

I think you might not have exactly grasped the concept of WP:Disambiguation pages yet. There's no need to create Chiang Mai Province (disambiguation) or Mueang Chiang Mai District (disambiguation), as both the names "Chiang Mai Province" and "Mueang Chiang Mai District" are already specific and can't refer to anything else. There's a disambiguation page at Chiang Mai (disambiguation) because the name "Chiang Mai" could refer to several things, and those topics are listed there to aid the reader in finding them. Also, disambiguation entries should in most cases include only one blue link and no red links; see WP:Manual of Style/Disambiguation pages for details. I suggest tagging those new pages for speedy deletion using {{db-a7}}. --Paul_012 (talk) 08:27, 14 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

It is hard to work out where you are coming from - but please note that some years a significant effort was put into making sure that predominantly southeast asia topics/subjects were established into categories - as the much larger asia range/scope that is not very helpful to anyone - so the category may have been emptied to the larger category (I havent watched what is going on) - that is counter-intuitive. It would be much appreciated that if you have an option in the future, that you might help keep southeast asia categories in scope, and not default to the larger asia category. If it needs explaining further, I would only be too pleased to do so. Thanks. JarrahTree 11:11, 16 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Polyesterchips,
I thought I'd add a little note to these messages. When categories become empty, they are tagged for CSD C1 speedy deletion and then sit for 7 days in Category:Empty categories awaiting deletion. If, after 1 week, they are still empty, then they are deleted. If, during those 7 days a page is placed in the category and it is no longer empty, then the tag is removed and the category is not deleted. If a category has been deleted simply for being empty and you decide later that you need it, feel free to recreate it.
So, if you make a category by mistake, you can either tag it immediately for speedy deletion, CSD G7 deletion at the request of the page creator, or you can just let the process continue and, if it is empty, it will be deleted in 7 days. I hope this helps explain things a little better. Liz Read! Talk! 20:16, 16 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Categorisation[edit]

I'm sure you've already looked at the WP:Categorization guideline, but may I remind you to take another close look at the section under WP:CATV? Since adding categories to an article implies strong association of the label with the subject, such categories must be verifiable and should be discussed in the article text. It's confusing at best to add categories such as Fascism in Thailand to pages which include no mention of the term, especially when the attribution can be contentious. Even for subjects where a reliable source has described them as such, a category still wouldn't be warranted unless it's widely shown to be a defining attribute of the subject. Likewise, the network monarchy as coined by McCargo is mainly a conceptual framework from an academic point of view; it's not an established factual network of which persons and organisations can clearly be attributed as being members. As such, I don't think it's a topic suited for a Wikipedia category, as it's not possible to verify beyond the observations made by those describing it. This is especially important with biographical articles, and more so those of living people, which fall under the WP:Biographies of living persons policy. The specific implications are covered at WP:Categorization of people. --Paul_012 (talk) 19:26, 20 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that these topics are controversial viewpoint, even current Thailand gradually become more clear in this subject, such as the Constitutional Court verdicts and systematic purge of activists. It is the best to revert them as it was. I am thinking about this too that I did too much in this area. Thanks for helping me. --Polyesterchips (talk) 02:18, 21 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Recipients of Thai royal pardons[edit]

Hi, just wondering about your recent additions of a few coup leaders and extreme right-wing groups to Category:Recipients of Thai royal pardons. Pardons are granted to people already convicted. The coup leaders gave themselves (or were granted) amnesty so they wouldn't even be convicted. You may need to create a new category, perhaps recipients of amnesty. But putting people in there will be subject to debate since amnesty is generally not granted to specifically named individuals but as a full or partial blanket on actions.

In addition, I don't think nawaphon, red gaurs, and village scouts were ever pardoned or granted amnesty as groups. Aithus (talk) 10:16, 31 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I tried to find those category but I can't. I will create new one without person in it but the events.--Polyesterchips (talk) 10:58, 31 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Possible category:

I will create Category:Events of Thai amnesty laws first, if you have more appropriated name, please help further.--Polyesterchips (talk) 11:20, 31 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I thought we could use South American countries that had amnesty laws for junta government as models for building categories you needed. But so far I couldn't find any categories associated with them. One other model to look at is Category:Spanish transition to democracy and the place for Pact of Forgetting within.
Comments on your work-in-progress:
  • You can add more articles to your Thailand section of Amnesty law, as can be seen in sections on Argentina and Chile.
  • Category:Events of Thai amnesty laws might remove the 1991 coup article since the amnesty discussion is on 1992 Black May article. You may need to take out 2006 coup as well since there is 0 mention of amnesty in the article right now (I don't remember if there is an amnesty for this one).
  • As for the name of your new category, I prefer Category:Events associated with Thai amnesty laws since it follows the structure of other categories I've seen, but I would be fine with the name you created. Aithus (talk) 12:57, 31 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

MP categories[edit]

Shouldn't the category name for MPs be Members of the nth House of Representatives of Thailand rather than National Assembly, as the latter typically also includes the Senate, which has different terms? --Paul_012 (talk) 01:33, 25 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I also considered both acceptable but I lean toward Category:Members of the French Parliament, for some reason, they arrange MPs and Senate seperately. I also saw Category:Members of the Parliament of the United Kingdom using the same pattern as France which Thai Parliament was heavily influenced. Best Regards. Polyesterchips (talk) 02:08, 25 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I take a look again, I agree with you that it should be Members of the nth House of Representatives of Thailand because in France they called National Assembly as the lower house. UK called House of Common. Please change them, thank you. Polyesterchips (talk) 02:57, 25 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I suggest, for Thailand, we should seperate clearly between Parliament and National Assembly, the first means for only the building (in Thailand) but the latter means Parliament in France and UK perspective. Polyesterchips (talk) 03:03, 25 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The meaning of the term is indeed rather counter-intuitive. Member of Parliament only refers to the elected members of the lower house, even when the country has a bicameral parliament like the UK. I've listed the categories at WP:CFDS; they should be renamed in a few days. --Paul_012 (talk) 12:28, 27 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Judo categories[edit]

Hello. I've reverted some of your recent edits. As most of articles and categories relating to judo competitions relate in fact to international ones, I found your restructuring to be between redundant and disruptive. If you still wish to enact it, please explain the changes you would like to be made and their scope. CLalgo (talk) 11:26, 11 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Renaming categories[edit]

Please do not try to change category names by manually empty them and creating new ones. The proper process to follow is WP:Categories for discussion. I don't agree with some of your changes and will be reverting some of the edits. --Paul_012 (talk) 19:33, 4 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, so far, I think I can roughly see that your intent was to bring the category names in line with those of other countries. But as I noted in one of the edit summaries, state agency (หน่วยงานของรัฐ) is the proper term used in Thailand, as explained in the State agencies of Thailand article. Government agency (ส่วนราชการ) has a much narrower meaning, so changing the category title to that will be inaccurate. And in any case, as mentioned above, please use the WP:CFD process instead of manually emptying and creating the categories. This also applies to merging categories. (I can see a point for merging the government-owned companies and state enterprises categories, but state enterprise is the wider term here, and such a merger would need to be discussed first.)

As for the royal officers category, following the structure imposed after 2017 makes logical sense for those who served after that time, but forcing it onto people from earlier periods would be anachronistic. I'm not sure of the best way to handle this, but I don't see why we can't also have a courtiers category as an umbrella that covers all people irrespective of their status as ข้าราชการในพระองค์. --Paul_012 (talk) 20:28, 4 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Polyesterchips,
I just want to echo what has been said above, please do not remove all of the contents of a category so that it is tagged for CSD C1 speedy deletion, especially if you just create a different but similar category to take its place. This is called "emptying categories out of process" and is considered disruptive editing. It's important to keep the page histories of all categories and articles so if you are seeking a deletion, merger or rename, make a proposal at Categories for Discussion or, at least, use the speedy rename feature on the CFD page if all you are seeking is a legitimate rename of a category and then our bot can move a category, and all of its contents to the new category title. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 21:31, 4 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
