Hi! Thanks for your comment. I think it's important that all films for notable directors and actors are created, even if they're are now lost or forgotten. Hi Smetanahue. Good work replacing the IMDb cite. I had been planning to do that for a long time, but never got around to locating a source for all the release dates.

Although I undid your change I'm thinking about your objection. I didn't mean it dismissively. My thinking is that if a movie is about a sick man's last wishes, we wouldn't hesitate to say he's sick. In this case, I think it's factual (and sourced) that the society in the village is sick. But perhaps you disagree and I'm interested in your thoughts. Excellent idea to try and get all the films up to a good standard. Last year, I did a lot of work on the main 2009 article, with the hope of getting it to a featured list (compare some of the Academy Award ones). Maybe the 2010 page can make it this time! Hello there. I'm sorry I didn't reply your message from a few months ago as I didn't know I had a message. I spent a fair amount of time on the Korean cinema section last summer before the new semester started and now, winter break, I hope to continue some as well. I don't speak Korean beyond basic conversation but I will take a look at the Korean page and see if I can write up a summary. Hello Smetanahue. After all your sterling work on film director navigation boxes, I am sorry to see film dates disappearing from some of them recently. Although their removal may give a more streamlined appearance to the box, it is usually at the expense of helpfulness. Dates are actually useful as navigational aids in all sorts of circumstances. For instance, if I want to check out Fellini's films of the 1970s, at present it requires trial-and-error to identify which ones they are. Or if I am a newcomer to a Soviet filmmaker like Dovzhenko, it is useful to see at a glance in which periods of his 30-year career he was most active before following up individual films. And in some cases the date is important as an identification element, especially where an English title has been used for a foreign classic. Take the case of Abel Gance's 1917 film Mater dolorosa (as opposed to his 1932 version): I doubt whether many Gance enthusiasts would recognise it under the title The Torture of Silence, but at least with a date attached they might track it down more quickly. As far as I can see, the majority of director navigation boxes have been constructed with the dates included, and I think that greatly enhances their usefulness. Many thanks for your prompt reply - and perhaps you'll permit me to come back with a couple of points! Firstly, on the comparison with other templates like Shakespeare, Scientology, World War II, these are complex subjects whose structure is built into the group divisions of the template - whereas in most film careers the dates really are the primary structuring element. If the template has a decade structure, that goes part of the way, but I still think the specific dates are better for films. Secondly, in those other templates that you mention, the article headings are arranged in alphabetical order, and that's clear enough; in the director templates, the articles are kept in their date order - but if the dates aren't there, it is confusing to see what the order is. But to return to my main issue: I take your point that navigation boxes should be devoted to navigation, but I would argue that the dates are often an important part of that navigation. If you are looking for a route to a film title that you know, then OK, the titles are enough. But I find that there are many occasions when I want to navigate by the date structure instead, or by a combination of title and date (this is the point about foreign films whose English titles are not always universally familiar even though they are Wikipedia's preferred form). So I think I would still like to champion the importance of film dates (above any other factor - and the TV listings usually bear that out!) Lampernist (talk) 14:45, 30 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

At some point, I would like to discuss this category with you. I went through and removed several artists who were erroneously categorized here, but there is one has been restored. If you would, can you take a look at Naohisa Inoue, and tell me what you think of his being categorized as a Surrealist artist? Being influenced by Surrealism is not the same as being a Surrealist, i.e., being associated with the movement. A few newspaper reviews are not adequate to make the connection, in my opinion. Hi. In removing the splits in Template:Peter Watkins you've also removed the chronological sense of these films, which was useful info for readers. May I suggest you consider restoring the dates for each film in parentheses? It's what I've seen done elsewhere -- and done myself here in Template:Norman McLaren -- and I believe it's useful. Hi! You seem to know more about coding templates than I do, is there any difference between using italic liststyle and apostrophes to make each entry italic? Such as on Template:Yasunari Kawabata. Using liststyle to sets italics sets the visual rendering to italic, including the generated "·" which is not good, but it fails to markup the individual list items and would set italics on anything anyone glues in there along with the link, such as a year or co-author. It's also likely to trip many editors who don't know how to escape the force-all italics. Hi Smetanahue,

I saw your comments on the talk page for Arrietty, and believe you have completely misapplied WP:RETAIN. What WP:RETAIN says is that an article should be left as is if the version of English used is currently consistent, but it should be changed to use the first version of English used in the edit history if it is currently inconsistent. If the article is consistent, then WP:RETAIN says it should be left as is, and the first version doesn't matter. In this case, the article was pretty consistent in using the name "The Secret World of Arrietty". While I personally think that it is a stretch to apply WP:RETAIN to a proper name, if you did want to apply it then following WP:RETAIN meant the article should have been left as is due to being consistent. The whole point of WP:RETAIN is that you should not go through the whole article and change one usage to another usage when the article is currently consistent. As you say, WP:RETAIN says "An article should not be edited or renamed simply to switch from one valid use of English to another." It isn't just talking about switching from the original version, but from any version you happen to come upon. That is why the section is titled "Retaining the existing variety" (emphasis added). Whatever version of English you see in the article when you happen to come upon it, that is the version you should leave it with. The part about using the first verison is only for when you come upon an article that is inconsistent. The whole point is that it isn't worth arguing over which version of Enlgish is used, so as long as the article is currently consistent, you should leave it alone. Whether or not someone else previously switched it is immaterial. Two wrongs don't make a right. Also, keep in mind that other concerns can be a valid reason to rename an article (such as the article having national ties, or one name being more common per WP:COMMONNAME). WP:RETAIN is only saying not to switch the version of English if there isn't a good reason to do so. Calathan (talk) 13:57, 29 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I still think you are completely missing the point of WP:RETAIN. The point of the guideline is to prevent the version of English from being changed over and over again. With WP:RETAIN, if someone else has done the wrong thing and needlessly changed the version of English used, you are still not supposed to change it back. Changing it back is just as much a violation of WP:RETAIN as changing it the first time. The main point of the guideline is not to prevent the style of English from ever changing from the first version, but instead to prevent it from needlessly being changing from the current version. What you say about any rogue being free to change articles back and forth is not true. If someone keeps changing the version of English in an article for no good reason, then they can be asked to stop, and if they refuse then other messures can be taken (such as a RFC/U, imposing edit restrictions, or banning them if that is what it takes). Reverting the changes to an article isn't stopping it from being changed, but changing it an additional time. WP:RETAIN isn't about keeping the article in a certain state, but about stopping a certain type of behavior. Hi no offense I removed the table because it was inconsistent with the rest of the article. If you want to convert the entire article to table format lets discuss and work on a scratch page first as it needs to show short list, long list and winner in the same table. My personal opinion is tables look nice but take considerable more work to create and thus discourage editors from doing the work required to maintain the article. In this case it's simple to just cut and paste the list into the article and add markup and its done, also easy to read without information overload, more compact. Unfortunately, in the process the information you are filling in is innaccurate and misleading. I am doing the edits with the agreement of the producer and director of the film (me being part of the animation team as well). It is important that info describing the production and financiers appears correct, and due to the nature of the film is very important that the team of animators is featured in the infobox, as their contribution was major. Same is true for the voice acting. I am reverting your changes. If you think stuff in the body of the article can be written better, go for it but please do not change the infobox.

I know the infobox is not as flexible as it should, which is unfortunate. The only one reasonable would be the "Hollywood cartoon" one, but it lacks the country fields. The Hollywood cartoon has the correct fields for actors (which is voice, not Starring) and fields for animators. But again, it misses important fields which makes it unsuitable.

It's very important that the animators are in the infobox, and the studios are mentioned there as I wrote them, all of them and in that order. Otherwise this could cause a lot of problems. I also think it's important that the voice actors are all mentioned. Again, this was the request of the producer/director (Anca Damian). I understand your concerns, but having the film on the homepage with incomplete information would rather hurt than help. Digitallysane

Hi, I really don't believe that your Category:Films based on works by Jin Yong is really that necessary, because all of the Category:Adaptations of works by Jin Yong's subcategories pretty much covered it. Please read WP:SUBCAT before reverting. The policy is clear:

When making one category a subcategory of another, ensure that the members of the first really can be expected (with possibly a few exceptions) to belong to the second also.

It's too arbitrary. Many countries have several big languages which can't be called "possibly a few exceptions". If we start to intertwine the different category branches for some countries, we would have to draw a line for how large a minority language (or the historical use of another language, like Latin) can be before the categories can't be intertwined. That line would be impossible to draw in a satisfactory way. Neither is there any immediate gain in your system - the obvious place to look for novels from a specific country is Category:Novels by country, not novels by language. I understand your concern, but it is not the case for a Reductio ad absurdum, since we are not talking about Category:Indian novels, which would make no sense to categorize by language. On the other hand, there are only a handful of exceptions for German novels not being written in German. And yes there is a problem: overcategorization. For example, The Appointment is categorized as Category:Novels by Herta Müller, which in turn is categorized as Category:German novels by writer→Category:German novels→Category:German-language novels. If we contravene the above policy, then The Appointment would be categorized as Category:Novels by Herta Müller and Category:German-language novels. I don't see it as a big deal, so readd it if you want to. But ideally all the content in a category should match the parent categories. That's not the case when you add biographical categories to an eponymous category. It's from the press release for the official selection. I can't find any real archive for it either, but here are the ones for 2009 and 2010. I found some earlier press releases too but they don't list the schools. So for the earlier ones, you might have to look at each film individually at festival-cannes.com, beginning with 1998. Jimmy Dore would clearly fall in that category as his quote of "We're not letting neoliberals fuck over the Democratic Party anymore" is typical of his program. There is supporting evidence that Jill Stein ("The answer to neofascism is stopping neoliberalism") and possibly Bernie Sanders "if New Orleans provides a lesson for the rest of the country, it is that we cannot afford the rule of bipartisan neoliberalism any longer"[1] falls in this category. Naomi Klein certainly does and Michelle Alexander has also criticised it "Alexander: I think it's critically important that the people who have been most harmed by mass incarceration, by mass deportation, by neoliberalism"[2]. Yanis Varoufakis was on Democracy Now! last Friday criticizing neoliberal policies that were destroying Greece after the 2008 crisis and his fight against elements of the financial industry embedded in the US and EU governing bodies ('My Battle With Europe’s Deep Establishment'). Those are just a few of the notable neoliberal critics.
