バートン・ワトソン（英: Burton Watson; 1925年6月13日 - 2017年4月1日）は、アメリカ合衆国の東洋文学者。
人物[編集]
1925年、ニューヨーク生まれ。太平洋戦争に従軍しマーシャル諸島での戦闘に参加、日本の降伏にともない日本を訪れる。1946年に帰国しコロンビア大学で中国語・中国文学を学ぶ。1951年に修士号を取得するが、中華人民共和国が成立し米国人は入れなかったため、日本へ渡り同志社大学の英語教師、京都大学で吉川幸次郎の研究助手となる。1954年にドナルド・キーンが編纂した日本文学選に、日本人の漢詩を英訳した。のち京都に住んでいたゲイリー・スナイダーと友人となる。
1956年、司馬遷の研究でコロンビア大学から博士号を取得する。1961年コロンビア大学に戻り教授として中国文学を教え、スタンフォード大学でも教え、仏典の翻訳に従事する。1973年に日本に渡り生涯を過し、多くの日本文学を英訳した。生涯結婚せずハヤシ・ノリオをパートナーとした。創価学会の翻訳も行った。1983年初めて中国を訪れた。
