Dr Samuel Jonathan Rushworth (born 1984) is a British Labour Party politician who has served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Bishop Auckland since 2024.[1]

Early life[edit]

Rushworth grew up in Blackpool attending local state schools, before studying economics at the University of Manchester.[2]

Career[edit]

Rushworth worked previously in international development.[3] He was a membership officer of the Labour campaign for international development.[4] During the COVID-19 pandemic he and his family raised money for charity.[5]

Rushworth unsuccessfully contested Blackpool North and Cleveleys in 2015 and Tatton in 2017.[6]

Rushworth was selected as the prospective parliamentary candidate for Bishop Auckland, a previously 'Red Wall' seat, but one of many that fell to the Conservatives at the 2019 General Election in 2022.[7] The Bishop Auckland seat was vacated by outgoing Conservative MP Dehenna Davison.[8] He was chair of Bishop Auckland Constituency Labour Party.[9]

At the 2024 general election, he was elected as MP from Bishop Auckland, winning 17,036 votes or 42.1% of the overall vote, and a majority of 6,672.[10]
